2018 Annual Author Event: RECAP

Did You Miss Barbara Claypole White at our Annual Author Event?

For our community of friends who may have missed author Barbara Claypole White at our 5th Annual North Carolina Author event on October 6th, a well-deserved look back on an interesting and informative afternoon… an afternoon that kicked-off International OCD Awareness Week and Mental Health Awareness Week: October 7 – 13, 2018.Debbie and Author Barbara Claypole white

As an author, Barbara writes what she describes as “hopeful family drama with a healthy dose of mental Illness.”  All her fiction is set in North Carolina’s Triangle area. As a mental health advocate, Barbara represents the A2A Alliance, an advocacy organization dedicated to overcoming personal hardship. Speaking about her fictional titles openly and from the heart, Barbara peeled back the layers that hide what can be an invisible but disabling condition: obsessive-compulsive disorder. Barbara’s time in front of her audience was engrossing and memorable, and far more than any of us expected. I think it is fair to say that we were, to a person, touched and educated.

Good Food Was Had By All from Lucindy Willis

To round out the afternoon, guest Chef Lucindy WIllis provided simple but hearty fare to nurture our bodies: a long-simmered minestrone soup, pear salad, and to-die-for rosemary shortbread.

Purple Crow Books

If you add in Sharon Wheeler of Purple Crow Books in Hillsborough, you have the good fortune to be able to purchase any or all of Barbara’s titles right on the spot at the winery – so we did! All in all, a unique opportunity to feed body, mind, and soul on a fall afternoon in our own Mebane, NC. Who knew?!

What is OCD Awareness Week?

Date: Oct 7, 2018 – Oct 13, 2018

OCD Awareness Week is an international effort taking place during the second week in October each year to raise awareness and understanding about obsessive compulsive disorder and related disorders, with the goal of helping more people to get timely access to appropriate and effective treatment. Launched in 2009 by the IOCDF, OCD Awareness Week is now celebrated by a number of organizations across the US and around the world, with events such as OCD screening days, lectures, conferences, fundraisers, online Q&As, and more. Learn more about OCD here. https://iocdf.org/about-ocd/

Mental Illness Awareness Week

Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 by the U.S. Congress in recognition of efforts by the National Alliance on Mental Illness to educate and increase awareness about mental illness. It takes place every year during the first full week of October. https://www.nami.org
