Speaking of Kentucky Derby Hats…

What is a fascinator anyway?

Hard to tell who is more decked out for the spectacle of the Derby at Churchill Downs, horse or human. Sure makes it fun to watch!  “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” is known as a people-watching event par excellence, probably because we sashay while those other beautiful animals go by in a flash.Fascinator hat

Wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is a long-established tradition that is believed to bring good luck, and who doesn’t need some of that? We invite all our customers to strut their Derby stuff at the winery on the day of the race, Saturday May 4th, 2019. Ladies and gents alike who wear decorated hats in the spirit of the fashion at Churchill Downs will receive a free wine tasting that afternoon.**

Royal fascinator hatNow to the question of the headwear called a fascinator. Smaller than a traditional hat but equally as stylish, this little number perches perfectly on your head and won’t give you the dreaded hat hair! It is attached to the hair by a clip, comb, or headband, and commonly made with feathers, flowers or beads. I have read that the term originates in 17th century Europe and comes from the word ‘fastened.’ It is usually ornate and perky, and seems to be popular among the royals. Good enough for me, and yes, it’s fascinating!

**You must be 21 to participate in a wine tasting. No baseball caps, please.
